Why should I become an Umpire?
If you love football and want to be an important part of the game, umpiring is one of the most rewarding ways to get involved. Anyone can become an umpire regardless of age, gender, or experience and the DDFUA provides the ideal environment to learn and grow while enjoying the experience.
As a new umpire, you’ll be supported through our first‑year program, where you can develop your skills in a comfortable, beginner-friendly setting with other new umpires. With guidance from our coaches and the support of senior umpires, you’ll learn the fundamentals and build confidence week by week. As your skills improve and your experience grows, you’ll have opportunities to progress upward through the grades and take on higher‑levels of competition.
Whilst umpiring is about developing on‑field skills and ability, it’s also a fantastic way to build fitness, earn some money, and build valuable life skills like communication and leadership. And as a proud member of the DDFUA, you’ll be part of a welcoming team that enjoys regular social events, strong camaraderie, and the pride of living the #RedandBlack trademark.

With umpiring, you are! The DDFUA has regular, structured training sessions with strength and conditioning as a core component, in addition to the regular games being officiated over a weekend.

Umpiring is all about making important decisions under pressure and communicating them to players, spectators and other officials - it's a great way to build confidence.
What you learn here will translate to interpersonal and communication skills in everyday life.
Be the best
Do you want to umpire some amazing football? An elite umpire gets opportunities to travel around the state and country, including carnivals, exhibition games and perhaps one day a WAFL or AFL match.
This is the launching pad for an exciting career as an elite umpire, and there are pathways in place to help you get to the top. Umpires who show promise at the DDFUA are selected for these pathways.

Finally, but most importantly, umpiring is great fun! You'll make lots of friends, have fantastic experiences and meet new people.
