Becoming An Umpire

If you love AFL football and want to be an important part of the game, then umpiring is for you. Anyone, regardless of gender and age, can become an umpire and find it a rewarding experience. As an umpire in the Demons District, you will have joined the perfect environment to learn the skills of field umpiring.

We offer a field umpire mentor program for first-year umpires so they can learn the skills in a comfortable environment. The DDFUA is the perfect place to learn the fundamentals of field umpiring under the expert advice of our coaches and with the support of senior umpires. As you master the skills and accumulate experience, you will be able to advance up the ranks and umpire higher grades.

As a member of the DDFUA, you will also have joined an active social group with a fun atmosphere. The DDFUA organises many events during the year and encourages all umpires to get involved. So as an umpire in the DDFUA you won't just be getting paid to get fit and developing some important life skills, but you will also be having lots of fun while doing it.

The benefits of umpiring are:

Be Part of A Team

All umpires are part of a team. There are AFL mentors, qualified coaches and experienced umpires to help you at every level of umpiring. So you can start umpiring knowing that whatever level you want to reach, you won't be doing it alone! We at the DDFUA are proud to be united as a team, in line with our Professional. Dedicated. United. Trademark.

Develop Your Personal Skills

Umpiring can build your confidence, help you make important decisions under pressure, and improve your interpersonal and communication skills. Training to be an umpire will train these areas too!

Have Fun!!

Finally, but most importantly, umpiring can be great fun! You make lots of friends, have fantastic experiences and meet lots of new people. The DDFUA prides itself on delivering a fantastic social experience that will keep you coming back for more. They all umpire because it is a heap of fun. After all, you get to have the best seat in the house for the greatest game of all!

Get Paid to Get Fit

Imagine how much easier it would be to be paid to be fit and healthy... Well with umpiring, you can! The DDFUA has regular, structured training sessions. Field umpiring rates start at $30 a game for Year 4 up to $110 a game for Year 12.

Be The Best

Are you fit, dedicated, motivated and hard-working? Do you want to umpire some amazing football? An elite umpire gets opportunities to travel around the state or the country, can umpire in carnivals and exhibition games in many new places, or one day may umpire WAFL or AFL games. This is the launching pad for an exciting career as an elite umpire, and there are pathways in place to help you get to the top. Umpires who show promise at the DDFUA can be selected for these pathways.
