To support the 'Umpiring is Everyone's Business' campaign, AFL Umpire Dean Margetts has spent his weekend break during the AFL split-round umpiring a game of Under 17s football in the Demons District in Western Australia.
Dean returned to grass-roots football as part of the Demons District’s major contribution to the Umpiring is Everyone’s Business campaign. The core philosophy of this campaign is that umpiring is everyone's business- whether you are a coach, player, parent, administrator, support, we all have a role to play in creating positive match day environments.
Dean umpired the Gosnells v Kenwick match Sutherlands C, Gosnells on Sunday, 27th June. This unique event demonstrated the AFL’s commitment to grass-roots football and local football’s obligation to ensuring that Umpiring is Everyone’s Business.
DDFUA President Daniel Gibbons was delighted with the event stating “it was truly a great day for football in the community. This promotional activity showed that grass-roots football values the role of the umpire in the game and that the Demons District has taken strong steps to ensure that the abuse of umpires is no longer tolerated."
The DDFUA has published a full report into this promotional activity that demonstrates how the game successfully promoted grass-roots football and the Umpiring is Everyone’s Business campaign.
