The Demons District Grand Finals were run and won over the 11th and 12th September. It was a stellar weekend of junior football with all games played in a competitive and fair spirit.
The DDFUA field, boundary, goal and emergency umpires represented the red and black proudly over the weekend and put in a near faultless display in all games.
The weekend kicked off with the 13s Grand Final, umpired by Brad Hurst and Cory Dugan. Belmont came from behind in the last quarter to win 6.7-43 against Victoria Park 4.4-28. It was a magnificent last quarter from Belmont who had trailed against Victoria Park for most of the game.
The 14s game was another tight tussle, umpired by Alex Freemantle and Matt Fennell. Victoria Park was triumphant 6.6-42 against Thornlie 5.6-36 after managing to hold onto a slender lead in the final tense minutes of the game.
The 15s pitted two traditional rivals against each other and was umpired by Scott Thompson and Bryan Doyle. South Perth remained too strong as it defeated Victoria Park 10.11-71 to 8.6-54.
The Grand Finals concluded at EFTel Oval with the 16s game, umpired by Daniel Gibbons and Clayton Gardiner. It was a tight game all day but Lynwood Ferndale managed to hold onto a solid lead built by an excellent third quarter. Lynwood Ferndale defeated Thornlie 11.10-76 to 9.8-62.
The 17s game was contested by two East Perth sides, Noranda and Ellenbrook, at Medibank Oval. Alex Mafrici joined the East Perth umpires in umpiring the showpiece game of the cross-district competition. Noranda won comfortably in a hotly contested game that was very close for the first half.
At the conclusion of the 16s game the DDFUA umpires wound down after a taxing Grand Final weekend at our annual Grand Final BBQ. It was again well attended with the umpires, and their family and friends enjoying the relaxed and convivial atmosphere.
At the end of the night everyone bid each other farewell for another season and vowed to train hard in the off-season for a bigger and better 2011.
