The DDFUA Development Squad was instituted in 2009. The Development Squad caters for first and second year umpires who are involved in the AFL Umpire Development (Green Shirt) Program. This provides new umpires with an excellent targeted development program that gives them focussed training and instruction on the fundamentals of umpiring. The Development Squad is involved with most of the training regime of the Senior Umpire Panel but are also given theory sessions specific to modified rules football.
Development Squad umpires are closely mentored by experienced umpires and umpire coaches who provide them with support and guidance on game-day. The Demons District also takes a firm stance on any players, coaches, officials and spectators who abuse umpires, thus providing the Development Squad umpires with a safe and non-threatening environment to develop their skills.
